It takes guts, passion, and a clear vision to step out on your own — something Aodhán King knows all too well.
For the Australian musician, those risks are worth it, as he aims to connect more people to God through his debut album, Beyond Us.
Aodhán is a founding member of the GRAMMY-nominated band Hillsong Young & Free. Since 2012, the band has achieved over 1.2 billion streams and produced hit anthems like Sinking Deep and Alive.
Aodhan has also contributed to songs for Hillsong Worship, UNITED, Cody Carnes, and Elevation Worship, but is now stepping out solo.
Sydney born Aodhán King spoke to me from his current home in Los Angeles to chat about his new single Without You and what it’s like working with Lauren Daigle.
“Songwriting’s always been like my way of like processing things with God,” Aodhán said. “Whether that be a song for Jesus or whether it’s a song about life. That was how I learned to pray… a lot of it’s just like, a journal of my conversations with God.”
The song Without You has become a reference point for Aodhán. The lyrics tell a very personal story:
I can’t live with You / I can’t do this solo.
I don’t know my way alone / I don’t want to go if You don’t.
It’s the story of me trusting God and asking Him to light the way, to go before me,” Aodhán said.
“It was a song that I wrote just before I moved to America and took the leap of faith to pursue my own thing. It’s a really special song to me… I think I’ll come back to that [song] for the rest of my life.”
When pressed, he revealed that his favourite song (at least right now) is a song with Lauren Daigle called Time.
“I’m so honoured that she’s a part of it” Aodhán said. “It’s a song based out of Ecclesiastes 3, which is, He makes everything beautiful in its time.
“I’ve felt for years that I’ve wanted to do this. It’s taken me longer than I thought it would. There’s been so many twists and turns and, but this feels like the perfect time.”
